A Message From Candidates for Colbert
In 24 hours, the first major battle of 2006 will culminate.
In 48, we'll know the result. Francine Busby needs our help now. The special election for California's 50th District takes place tomorrow, June 6th, and the person taking the seat of GOP felon Randy "Duke" Cunningham will be chosen. Will it be Washington insider and divisive Republican Brian Bilbray? Or will it be fresh-faced, progressive Democrat Francine Busby?
Ultimately: Will an otherwise well-established Republican district be lost to Democrats, casting the brightest light of doubt yet on a breathtaking amount of GOP Congressional seats?
Read breaking news below about why this race is tipping Busby: McCain pulls support from Bilbray; Active Kos Candidate Marcy Winograd endorses Francine Busby; Candidates for Colbert throws full support behind Busby national fundraising campaign.

This weekend, Busby posted a personal request on Crooks and Liars for one last big volunteer push during election week (hint: That's
this week!). Part of her message
reads:
We've got 300 volunteers lined up right now, and to give it everything we've got on Monday and Tuesday we need 400. I hate to ask, but if any of you can help us get there, we'll all be eternally grateful out here.
Anybody in the San Diego area who wants to help can let us know by emailing us at volunteer(at)busbyforcongress.org or calling us at (760) 479-0114.
If you're anywhere near California's 50th District, please do what you can to help out this race. Use the contact information listed above or visit the Volunteer Page
Or, if you're removed from the race geographically but close to it ideologically (and we all should be), help the Candidates for Colbert team show her what kind of national support she has by shooting her a Last minute donation
This is the type of campaign in which every single person makes a difference, as will every single dollar and every single vote. Thus far, Democrats have been hopeful about Busby, but always wary of the fact that the race could likely go either way.
But, in the past week, as discussed below, Busby's caught all the breaks:
Bilbray Loses High Profile Steam:
Concerning Busby's main opponent Brian Bilbray's falling out with GOP "star" John McCain, CQ Politics writes:
Is GOP's Bilbray Running Into a Political Perfect Storm?
[...]
Bilbray had scheduled a fundraiser for Wednesday that would include a guest appearance by Arizona Sen. John McCain, whose image as a political maverick gives him more cross-party appeal than virtually any other major Republican figure. But McCain revealed Tuesday night that he would not attend, which Democrats heralded as evidence that Bilbray's campaign is faltering.[snip]
Busby sought to preempt McCain's expected visit by placing a Web ad on her campaign site accusing Bilbray of "lying" about her position on immigration. She also sent McCain a letter noting that Bilbray has attacked her for supporting the senator's position on the issue.
Busby subsequently claimed some credit for McCain's decision to back out. "It was directly related to the focus on the attacks that Bilbray has made on Francine's support of McCain's plan, whether that was through her letter or just from hearing that Francine was under attack for supporting his plan," said Busby campaign communications director Brennan Bilberry. "I'm sure that didn't sit too well."
Bilbray, though, maintains that McCain withdrew to keep their differences on this one hot-button issue from becoming a distraction.
"The feeling was that immigration was the issue, not campaign finance reform and the other things we worked on together ... and he would be placed in a compromising position," Bilbray told CQPolitics.com Wednesday.
Who said anything about campaign finance reform? It's clear to everyone that immigration is the issue, and his attacks on Busby's support of McCain brought the issue into the limelight. Yet Bilbray still thinks he's disagreeing.

Marcy Winograd Endorses Francine Busby.
A point of contention for some on this website, passionate anti-war candidate Marcy Winograd--running in California's 36th District Primary--announced her support for Francine Busby, saying:
I Endorse Francine Busby
As I am dedicated to the proposition of taking back the House for the Democratic Party, I endorse Francine Busby for Congress in CA-50. I hope when she wins that seat she will strongly oppose the Bush administration's war policies, help this country withdraw from Iraq, and help keep us from venturing into any other needless war.
