Friday Movie Night! --An Inconvenient Truth
Guess what everyone!? I didn't see Al Gore's new film "An Inconvenient Truth" tonight. Why? Because it isn't playing in my City, County, State, or Region yet.
In fact, it's not playing in most places across the US yet. But that certainly has not stopped it from pulling off a magnificent showing, as discussed below the fold.
But, most of the coverage thus far--and I don't mind it--has been about Al Gore the political figure. I thought I'd do a little reminding about An Inconvenient Truth as a film--a film which is irrevocably tied to Al Gore, but which is ultimately about an issue greater than him or any of us: Global Warming.
Such a film, and the man tied to it, had to have expected some backlash from the Far-Right; but what most of us didn't expect is the largely warm reception it has gotten on this, its opening weekend.

An Inconvenient Truth has earned $123,549 in its first two days after showing in only 4 theaters.
On Wednesday, it opened with earnings of $78,994, which, if I'm reading this chart correctly, that puts it ranked at #11 nationwide. Considering its only in four theaters, I'd say that's a pretty great opening day.
The movie review website Rotten Tomatoes--which lumps a large number of independent reviews together and averages out a 'final grade'--gave An Inconvenient Truth an 88 Percent, and take it from someone who frequents that website, that is a hell of a good grade. They're usually pretty harsh. You know how film critics can be.
I'm tired of missing the action! And what am I going to do about it? I'm going to call and email my local theater(chains), and ask them to show An Inconvenient Truth as soon as possible. More on that, including contact info for major theater chains, later in this diary.
But first, here are what some of the critics are saying about An Inconvenient Truth:
"Voters who perceived Gore as a stiff, bland politician hen-pecked by the issues and unable to connect to his audience may be pleased by this makeover."
Jeremiah Kipp, Slant Magazine
"What could have been mired in political rhetoric or techno-speak is instead illuminating, fascinating and sometimes frightening."
Claudia Puig, USA Today
"I wish that there was a way to get the facts in this film in front of the audience that needs to see it, the audience that takes the words of human mockeries like Michael Crichton and Michelle Malkin as gospel."
Devin Faraci, CHUD
"An Inconvenient Truth is no great shakes as moviemaking, but it may just shake enough bean counters out of complacency to make a difference."
Jan Stuart, Newsday
"... much of what Gore says in this slide show he gives to people whose minds are not yet fully formed (undergraduates, actors) is absurd, and his assertions often contradict each other."
Kyle Smith, NEW YORK POST
lol-- I just had to include this quote from the Post. As a member of the army of idiots that, according to Smith, make up America's college student body, I can't help but be mildly miffed at the idea that Al Gore is playing to an impressionable audience with diminished mental capacity, while George Bush delivers speeches at Nascar races to audiences who've been drinking since 10am.
And who is this elder statesman who can see through the alleged BS so much more clearly than any Ivory Tower or Hollywood elitest? Take a look:
Hopefully one day when I graduate I can drink the amount of kool-aid this kid did to be telling people that they need more development at that age. But, when his main argument against Global Warming is "Al Gore has used those stories before," the denying right must be in trouble.
And then there's this poignant quote, best for last:
"What one comes away with hoping for the future is that we do not look back on Al Gore as we look back now on Eisenhower ("Why We Fight") or Edward R. Murrow ("Good Night, and Good Luck")-- as a man who gave a warning unheeded."
Laura Clifford, REELING REVIEWS
Even when a theater here in Indiana does show the film--on June 16th!--it won't be any large chain, and it won't be out here in the sticks(sprawling suburbia) where people really neet to see it.
Go to the films website (http://www.ClimateCrisis.net), where they have a great list of the release dates for locations nationwide.
Are you happy with the theaters that have decided to show the film to your neighbors? Didn't think so.
As I said earlier, I'm ready to let my local theaters know what I'd like to see in their immaculate fascilities. (Hint: It's not Scary Movie 5)

Here is some contact info for some large theater chains. For some, I was able to find only a comment section on a website, for others, I got corporate email addresses, etc. (From a pro-life org calling for action against Kerasotes for pulling some of their pro-life ads here in Indiana, no less!)
